Playing it
Square Drill
Purpose:
To practice general
passing and controlling skills, as well as ball possession and
tackling.
Procedure: In an area 40x40 yards square, teams
play 6 v 6 possession soccer. If a team executes a set number of
consecutive passes with out the opponents touching the ball, the
latter are "punished" by having to sprint through the "gate"
(made up with posts at one corner), around the square and back
inside the gate again to rejoin the
game. As soon as one team attains the agreed number of passes
the coach blows his whistle and starts timing: the other team is
allowed 35 seconds in which to cover the 160 yards and after
this the coach whistles a second time to signify "time up". As
soon as the second whistle blast is signaled, the team inside
the square starts another passing sequence to try to achieve the
required number of passes to send the opposing team around the
square again. The penalized team must set off immediately after
the first whistle blast to get as many players back into the
square as they can by the time 35 seconds have elapsed.
Development:
(a) Any
player who "gives" the ball away with an unforced error drops
out of the game, leaving his team a man short; he can only come
back when his team regains ball possession.
(b) Impose
conditions, such as two-touch soccer, or the use of a no
tackling rule - only interceptions allowed. |
